Voicings was made with the intention that it be a provocative film and get people talking about the subject of the movie. Voicings, addresses the elephant in the room no one is talking about, namely the circumstances adult men find themselves in who marry to meet the expectations of church and society, but who have never dealt with their homosexual feelings, leading them to double lives that cause them to risk everything. Voicings is a cautionary tale showing the effects of what happens when sexuality is pushed underground forcing men to seek alternative methods of dealing with their feelings and sexuality. These alternative methods include such risky behaviors as cruising, hooking up with strangers, sex in parks and public places that can lead to diseases that are brought home to wives and families as well as legal ramifications including job loss, fines and even incarceration.

While the main character, Douglas, may not end up being your favorite character, he is a character found too frequently in society that we ignore everyday. You may relate to him, pity him or even hate him, but hopefully you will talk about him. These are complex situations that cannot be treated lightly or ignored. Voicings is a step toward understanding and discussion of these complex issues. Visit the official Voicings movie website at www.voicingsmovie.com.

The conference attendees, both gay and straight, included the members of Affirmation – Gay and Lesbian Mormons, LDS Reconciliation, and also the members of LDS Family Fellowship, an organization for parents of gay children, as well as others who began the discussion at the conference. We invite everyone to continue that discussion on this blog. Look for the link in the black bar below this post or any of the other posts to leave a comment. You can also click on the title to the post and you will be taken to page where you can comment on the post.

In conjunction with the Salt Lake Film Center and the Salt Film Society, Voicings was shown at the Tower Theater with their monthly Gay and Lesbian Series. Voicings was paired with the film Trembling Before G-D. Stephen Williams introduced Voicings briefly before the showing explaining that Voicings inspired by the irony he experienced at the funeral of a man who had lived a double live for 30+ years. At the funeral Stephen listened to one glowing eulogy after another about the man parising him for his life well lived. Stephen had know him in a completely different context where he had lived a life meeting up with men secretly.

Voicings was complete a few weeks prior and had shown at the Sunstone Symposium making this the second official shoing of the film publically.
